“They Would Lose: The WNBA” | Plaxico Burress Joins Clay Travis That High School Boys Basketball Could Defeat WNBA
Sports commentator Clay Travis is setting off a battle of the sexes debate that comes with a cash prize. Recently, he issued a verbal challenge to the WNBA and the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces that a high school boys' basketball team could take down – and he's willing to put his money on the line to prove it: $1 million.
"I'll put a million dollars on the line, your WNBA champion team against a 2024 high school boy's state champion team of my choice,” Clay Travis tweeted. “You guys win, you get a million bucks of my money, my team wins, you all pay me a million and I give it all to the boy's high school team. You in?"
Plaxico Weighs In
On the latest episode of Up On Game, Plaxico Burress agreed.
"If he gets to pick any team that he wanted to play against the WNBA champion, I would probably say they would lose: the WNBA," Burress said on Up On Game to a surprised LaVar Arrington. "It's a different brand and a different style of ball from a physical standpoint.
"To being able to get up and down the court, jumping high, dunking, they can't defend in the paint and get out in transition. That's where they would be most vulnerable at, having to bang with those young men...how are they going to defend it."
Co-host TJ Houshmandzadeh disagreed.
"Call me crazy; I'm going with the WNBA. We know the men are going to have a physical advantage: quickness (and) explosiveness," TJ said." But are we talking (about) the understanding of the game? The technical aspect? The skilled aspect? The WNBA has a huge advantage...I don't care how gifted they are, I'm rolling with the WNBA."
Polarized Debate
Travis originally made his bold claim in February and recently resurfaced on Twitter, challenging the Aces' dominance on the court. Many people criticized Travis's take as disrespectful and ignorant, with Las Vegas Aces guard Chelsea Gray, a three-time champion herself, the loudest. She tweeted at Clay Travis on Wednesday, calling him a "dumbass" in response to his claim.
"I played travel league basketball growing up (in high school), and we were on the road, and I saw a high school Kobe Bryant," host LaVar Arrington said. "I saw Stephon Marbury playing; I saw Lamar Odom playing, I saw Samaki Walker, I saw Antoine Walker, all due respect to women's athletics: one of them on one of those high school teams are running through a WNBA roster. Shouts out to the WNBA…all the respect"
The new debate is on.
