Get You A Teammate Like James Winston And Travis Kelce | Both Take L’s In Court Of Public Opinion To Help Team
In team sports you hope that your squad will hold you down when it's crunch time, and in today's NFL some stars are willing to sacrifice for the greater good. In this case, one player defied the coach, and another took away the potential for an extended personal state streak to help a teammate get a bonus bag.
Enter Jameis Winston, who did a fake out on the last play of the New Orleans Saints’ win over the Atlanta Falcons by taking a victory formation knee, triggering a surrender of a down, only for him to pass the ball to Jamaal Williams, who scored a final and seemingly unnecessary touchdown. The Saints were winning handily after the Falcons didn't score in the second half.
Not So Saintly
The Saints wound up winning the game 48-17.
Winston and the team decided their running back teammate, who had not had a touchdown all year, was due for some padding on his stat sheet. The blowback came fast from now-former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith, who confronted Saints head coach Dennis Allen on the field at the end of the game to let his displeasure known vehemently.
Winston fell on his sword for the team, standing up for his teammate and telling the media why they made the play for Williams with only 0:03 left in the fourth quarter.
"I apologized to [Allen] because the play was 'Victory,'" said Winston postgame. "But I also explained to D.A. that it was a team decision. I think that when you have a team morale and I asked the guys, 'What do you want to do?' We know how much Jamaal means to this team. And I understood from D.A.'s perspective. … D.A. didn't condone that at all."
While some are saying that James’ defiance is a signal for an out of control locker room, most players on social media are giving him props for standing tall.
Travis Helped Teammate Bag Million Dollar Sack
Over in Los Angeles, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 13-12 with the noticeable absence of Travis Kelce. Instead of storming SoFi Stadium to bring home the win, head coach Andy Reid revealed that Kelce wanted to forgo yet another NFL record and instead his teammate, Chris Jones, took time on the field to secure an incentives bonus bag.
Jones’ sack in the third quarter netted him a $1.25 million bonus. He promptly exited the game after the play. Kelce would have only needed 16 yards to extend his 1,000-yard streak to eight seasons by a tight end, but alas, Kelce opted for the greater good image-wise. The focus post-game would have been Travis's additional accomplishments and subsequently his famous relationship with pop star, Taylor Swift.
"You can see by the response of the players that the (sack) meant a bunch," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said after the game. "Not only for him but for the guys pulling for him so that's a couple of cheeseburgers right there...he wanted to get that done.
"Travis is a humble guy, it's different because of the financial part of it with Chris. (Travis) didn't want to come off as selfish. All the players wanted him to play but he just goes, 'you know what, I don't like the way it feels.' He's not into that and so he chose not to play. I completely understand it but that's him. Most guys would have gone out and probably done it but he said, 'I've got a lot of records but this one here, I'm not going to do it this way."
After all, Taylor Swift newfound crossover fame and two Super Bowl wins, why not let Jones get the spotlight and share the spotlight and the love?
Jameis and Travis, making teammates great again.
